Translation

Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who reported hearing it directly from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) .

"Actions are judged by intentions, and every person will get what they intended. So whoever migrated for worldly gain or to marry a woman, then his migration was for what he migrated to."

Aligning the Heart with Our Deeds

Two people can perform the exact same outward action, yet the ultimate worth of their efforts can be worlds apart. This timeless teaching gently turns our focus inward, reminding us that every deed is weighed by the quiet purpose resting in the heart. Outwardly grand efforts, such as undertaking a long journey or relocation, take their value entirely from the underlying goal—whether for temporary worldly benefit or something deeper and sincere.

In our daily lives, it is easy to become absorbed in the mechanics of doing, forgetting our underlying why. Consider these everyday moments:

  • Work and Career: When we put in long hours at the office or study late into the night, our focus can easily drift toward seeking applause, chasing status, or looking impressive to peers. While praise may follow, it is fleeting. When we consciously realign our intention to earn an honest living, serve our families, and contribute benefit to others, our daily labor gains genuine, lasting meaning.
  • Helping Family and Friends: We often extend support to relatives or friends during hardships. If our underlying motive is to earn future praise or ensure they remain indebted to us, we set ourselves up for resentment. However, when we help purely out of sincere care, seeking only true goodness without expecting gratitude, our hearts remain peaceful regardless of how people respond.
  • Social Media Sharing: When sharing advice, charitable giving, or personal milestones online, checking our inner drive helps us notice whether we are seeking external validation or genuinely hoping to spread benefit.

Takeaway for the week: Before beginning any significant task this week—whether a work assignment, a family commitment, or an act of generosity—pause for a quiet moment to renew your intention and ensure your heart is seeking what truly matters.
